ABOUT
THE
ARTIST

MARY SEBASTIAN

Love of nature and her extensive floral design background have gifted Mary Sebastian with an intensified relationship with nature. She has been working with natural elements since she was a child, and her experience is evident.

For Mary Sebastian, less is more. She accentuates the innate properties of her chosen materials, exposing organic balance and movement. Both architectural and organic, her work is bold and dramatic, yet unmistakably clean and simple. Offering multiple vantage points, she draws the viewer in with one of the most vital of human characteristics – the sense of touch. As significant as the visual experience, touch becomes a tangible form of experience and emotion in Sebastian’s work.

Mary Sebastian earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Western Michigan University, and has years of experience in the floral and interior design industries, both of which have developed her sense of composition, texture and form.

"Sculpture is the three dimensional projection of a feeling, an inspiration, and ultimately a creation. To receive the inspiration to create and share that creation with others is my dream. My sculptures are a reflection of my inner soul and self, conveying the strength and passion I feel for my work. They are a projection of a feeling, an inspiration, and ultimately a creation. Both abstract and organic, my work evokes vitality, energy and motion. As I work, I listen to the rhythm of my chosen material; it guides my behavior and sets my pace. I carve directly and intuitively so that I may understand its true character. It is my hope that the softness and beauty of my pieces will draw the viewer in to linger and touch them. One of my favorite quotes is from Andre Gide: “Art is a collaboration between God and the artist, and the less the artist does the better”. Another favorite is from Leonardo DaVinci: “Where the spirit does not work with the hand, there is no art”. I thank Jesus every day for the gift of inspiration and the ability to create." - MARY SEBASTIAN
